How to avoid being stung while you're stranded.
Standing outside at midnight is the worst possible position to negotiate from, and some operators build their pricing around exactly that. Four questions that protect you.
- Make them say one numberNot a call-out fee with the work priced later. One total, covering everything, agreed before anyone is dispatched.
- Write down who you spoke toA business name and a licence number on the phone, then check the person at your door is the same one. Reluctance here tells you plenty.
- Find out if drilling is the planA drilled lock has to be replaced, which changes the bill considerably. You should be choosing that, not hearing about it afterwards.
- Keep your card in your pocketThere is no reason to pay anything before the door opens, and no reason to accept a job with no invoice at the end of it.

We ask, every time. Licence with the address on it, a lease, a rates notice, or post with your name. Anyone willing to skip that step will do it for the next person too.
Will someone actually answer at 2am?
Someone is rostered on all night, every night. It is a normal shift for us rather than a phone ringing beside a bed, which is why the arrival time holds overnight.
